Hidden Figures is doing well at the box office and has good chance at being nominated. Arrival was a surprise hit and is almost a lock.

Those "swag baskets" get more lavish every year.

He told a reporter (decades later, of course) that he hit his head on a tree branch and was knocked off the horse, unconscious, because he couldn't see with the hood on. When he came to his senses, he was propped up under the tree and Griffith was standing over him, pouring him a scotch to ease his pain.

It's because a lot of those movies are crammed into the final month or so of the year, when audiences barely have time to see them amid the holiday rush. "Awards season" is a problem the Academy created for itself, I guess. I'm not saying these movies would all be box-office smash hits if they were released earlier in

The Ninth Configuration is one of the great batshit-insane movies of the past 50 years. Along with Fat City and The Dion Brothers, it also proves the greatness of Stacey Keach.

Should it? It was a fun movie, but come on. Most of the laughs came from one-liners, not so much from the story itself. It poked fun at superhero movies pretty effectively, but it ultimately had its own generic plot.

John Ford is one of the klansmen who rides across the river in the climactic sequence.

Absolutely. How many silents had entire cities constructed for their sets? Intolerance, The Thief of Baghdad, Metropolis etc. Only Tati's Playtime and a few other films from the past 60 years have taken such risks.

So will either be the full six-hour version? I've only seen Coppola's four-hour version, where Carmine Coppola did the score; a lot of silent buffs have problems with it, but I love it and the music still sticks in my head. All the same, a complete-as-possible version would, of course, be preferable.

Great stuff! I would love to see how they pulled off some of the effects from Sherlock Jr. and Napoleon, two very different movies that are among the most eye-popping experiences in my lifetime.

Loved it when their music helped bring down the Berlin Wall. Gotta give them points for historical accuracy.

One thing that's kinda bugged me: Does the studio insist that "And The" be capitalized in the titles?

That was the most puzzling of the GG awards. Taylor-Johnson did a fine job, don't get me wrong, but the character was pretty one-note.

For the former, check out the films of Jean Rollin. Can't help you with the latter.

I saw the first one alongside Van Helsing, which came out around the same time, and I actually thought Underworld was the worse of the two. Didn't bother with any of the sequels, kinda surprised they're not (yet) in direct-to-DVD territory.

The semi-colon is underrated.

She was very funny in an episode of "Fresh Prince" where she joked about the cop-slapping thing. And Huston's Moulin Rouge is a glorious and joyful movie to watch. R.I.P.

Seriously. All I remember about that movie is that my ears were nearly aching for a few minutes after the credits rolled, because of the too-generous use of echoing boom in the action scenes.

The trailer for the movie actually tells us that the first of those "twists" is the whole premise. So this is a classic example of the movie's marketing being completely out of sync with the movie itself… unless the Hollywood suits thought audiences would be wooed by the trailer, then surprised by the movie's actual

This looks like the producers of Movie 43 decided to work for the Hallmark Channel.
