You know, I entertained the brief thought that the hole in the tree was Rhonda's Lady Macbeth moment and she was cracking under the strain.

I'm not a huge horror movie fan, but as someone who adored anthology TV like Darkroom, TZ, Tales from the Darkside, etc. - this may be in my wheelhouse. May be worth watching via iTunes.

Oh, I took that line as 'aspirational puffery' or someone brown-nosing the rich young heiress all the way up to her larynx.

The "Jane Austen" line might be lampshading - Austen's novel Northanger Abbey mocks gothic horror conventions and the idea of taking their view of human nature seriously.
