There's real-world dumb, which is saying stuff like "Lisa, vampires are just make-believe, like elves, gremlins and eskimos." Then there's cartoon-dumb, which is breathing fire because you drank lighter fluid. The problem with the show is the humor is too cartoony in general, Homer is the most obvious case.

oh, and what really hits me is the way he ends, cutting himself off and saying "anyway, that's my spiel" in that inimitable way. Just a nut-punch of sadness
hearing that VO of Strummer at the end of The Future is Unwritten - when he's talking about trying to find common humanity and his voice cracks up … so heartbreaking. That one really got to me.

I didn't cry at the end of Children of Men, mostly because it had scared the living crap out of me for two hours by then. Seriously, I was too beaten and scared to cry. It is definitely one of the most freighteningly plausible sci-fi movies I've ever seen.
