I just noticed the relationship between the Durnsville turn, which is coming up!, and the Durnsville Turns (Turns! Turns! Turns!).
I don't know, the binging side of me agrees with you but I think that shorter seasons tend to have a lot more focus which leads to better shows in general.
And, when they were writing these episodes, it was still supposed to be on NBC. Even with some editing it would be hard to remove all of the formula-ness to make it more binge friendly.
