I hope you're right, but I've been expecting that for years and currently the GOP has the presidency, Congress, most state governments, and seem well-disciplined and utterly spineless. They seem to be doing pretty well.

I'm reading Democracy for Realists now and one of the main points is that very few people vote on policy, it's mostly group identity and partisanship. If that's true, it's no wonder that people are evasive or their justifications often shift. This also reinforces my belief Trump support is mostly about whiteness.

Maybe it is bad optics, though I'm doubtful many voted for Trump because they thought he was against banks. Though if it is bad optics, I'll count that as an additional point in his favor.
