I kept wondering why they’d cast Vince in a tiny little nothing shot from Terry’s memory flashes. So that paid off here. The problem with casting him is that I immediately have sympathy for his character because I can’t stop associating him with his character from Deadwood.

Yeah but those “breaks” in Penny Dreadful were episodes that centered almost entirely on Eva Green. Who commits to material like no one’s business. And both times they served to further character development and history that paid off in the larger season plot.

My problem with it is that it didn’t really feel like it furthered the season plot. Without it, the season would have been 8 episodes like the previous one. I feel like there could have been a tighter way to give El development without taking a whole episode for something that felt like a dead end.
