Coke was fun, in the dotcom heyday of the late 90s, there'd always be some easy coke access in a lot of the Mission bars, and we'd all get into some lively philosophical discussions. But yeah, no spazzing out either.
Excellent point on the having things to do. I remember a friend freaking out in his apartment because he felt stuck. Meanwhile I amused myself greatly by perusing all the US Weeklies that were laying about in a completely unplanned manner.
Shrooms are fun. Just make sure you don't have a particularly excitable or jumpy friend to do it with. Those guys are no fun when you're trying to calm them down while on your own shroom hit.

Good link. The Guardian is definitely where i go for the best reportage on the beautiful game. And despite all the issues (expensive transfers, oligarch owners buying titles full stop, utterly mercenary players, greed and corruption on a grand scale), it really is an almost perfect game.
