There was build up to the sales staff having more power (money) - the episode where Jim and Michael duked it out to be "demoted" to sales because sales paid much better than management.

I'm embarrassed to say that for a moment I thought some sort of voice morphing had been used to make him sound more like the actor who plays Topher.
