From what I've read, although the final 8 episodes aren't written, they have been plotted out to some extent  at the same time they plotted the first 8, and they do now have an ending they are building towards.

I concur. I love all four seasons but for me there's never been an episode as flat-out thrilling as that one. I just remember the giddy excitement of realising just how unbelievably tense the show was capable of being and that feeling of holy-shit-I-genuinely-have-no-idea-where-this-is-going-to-go.
