It could be that they're building up to it. At least, I hope they are. They've mentioned that only Diana has found her family's Book of Shadows. It could be that the others find theirs, in time, what adds to the history and mythology.

In all fairness, I quite like how they're so bumbling. It reminds me of the earlier episodes of Charmed (which, admittedly, had a better cast, plot, dialogue, etc). I think it would be unrealistic for them to know much about magic, since they're newbies essentially.
