Roommate stories: my first college roommate had an eating disorder, lied about the fact that she smoked on her application (I wanted a non-smoker) and strongly believed that I was only entitled to exactly half of the refrigerator space, even if she had nothing else in there but the big bottle of diet soda she drank…

But when the choice is between telling the truth and then probably losing the most important person in your life or lying and giving that person a chance to heal — I'd pick the lie every time. 
I'm sure Dean doesn't like lying yet again, but he knows that if Sam gets wind of the truth before he's strong enough to live…
