Weird Science is stands out as being formally the most different of the Hughes filmography but it has so much to say about being a dorky kid that I'd rank it right behind The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off in terms of importance.

The line about how your heart dies as you grow up always seemed cheesy to me as a kid and now all the articles about millennials make me think it's probably the most real line of dialogue in the film.

The kind of person who says adulting and Cooly McCoolDude is also likely the person who sides with Principal Rooney.

If only he could fight a bunch of flying aliens or robots who are trying to stop him from defeating a gizmo in the sky.

Those Universal movies are terrible when viewed as anything other can campy relics so it makes sense that they would try to go in a different direction every single time.

The second half looks great but the first half looks like someone did a quick google for what people liked about previous Tom Cruise movies and merged the plane sequence from Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation with him being reborn in Edge of Tomorrow.

Store is probably the only thing on Side B that actually sounds like a B-side. Everything else is just as good, if not better, than a song on the original album.

Besides for the limp material, the filmmaking is amateur. If it isn't an establishing shot or a shot-reverse dialogue, it's too dark, too close or seemingly out of focus. The entire climax with the monorail plays like colour graded B-roll.

Saw Sully on Friday. To be pithy, it's a mini-masterpiece about a mini-miracle. The second one works to the extent that it's second rate filmmakers trying to recreate one of their favourite movies but Begins and Rises are borderline unwatchable and, if it wasn't for them being serious and solemn films that make take Batman seriously and solemnly, they would be rightfully disparaged.

I didn't particularly like Another 48 Hrs. but Walter Hill's commitment to having guys get shot and fly backwards through panes of glass is second to none. It might be my favourite kind of special effect after the squibs that burst out both sides of a body.

After seeing Existenz, I was extra interested in seeing Cronenberg's version because his thesis is that once you've bended reality, there's no going back and there's no real world for you anymore. Verhoeven's Total Recall ends pretty much on the point where that would become relevant.

I don't know how Aaron Eckhart couldn't parlay being the best actor in The Dark Knight into at least a brief stint of good movies. He seems to get one every five years or so and then the rest is stuff like this.

Not only that, the footage of them tends to imply they have a particular interest in their team and yet 99% of the time, they look like they'd rather be anywhere else.
