Yeah, that's true. With Jillette, I've found that he's a lot calmer and reasonable-seeming when the setting calls for it, but hyped-up and booming when he needs to be "on". Actually, I DO find it entertaining, even when I disagree, because HE believes it.

I'm a little bit disappointed by how many people on here are saying some variation of, "I hate these guys because of their politics." I mean, come on, really? That's weak. Now, hating them because of Jillette's obnoxiousness is perfectly reasonable, but are we all so fragile that we can't bear to have our noses

Yeah, that was my experience as well. Lots of fun.

I totally disagree with Jillette's politics (not all of them — he's pretty hippy-dippy about some things, surprisingly), but that's never made him insufferable to me. I've always just taken that as part of his "in-your-face button-pusher" shtick.

My five-months-pregnant wife got to go up on stage and appear in their Vegas show, which was loads of fun. Now, my wife is six feet tall, and she looked like a child next to Jillette, who has got to be part sasquatch.

Aww, you went civil! That's no fun! But thanks.

This guy gets it.

SATIRE

"Satire is what closes on Saturday night."

Why on Earth does the feature writer (usually Eakin, though not today) always feel the need to prod the interviewee? This is the most maddening part. I don't need an ass-kisser, I don't need a devil's advocate. Just keep it clean.

ok, sorry — you're not even the target of this rant, @avclub-f16faf5d680d7b88e2e157c1c137c497:disqus. Please carry on.

Every single time the AV Club does an article that refers to R.E.M., the comments fill up with posts that make it clear that there are countless (presumably younger) people out there who are willing and eager to judge the band by nothing but their singles and albums from the 90s and late 80s, as if their critical

I'm gonna make you feel really bad here: a couple of years after my brother died, my dad cited "Everybody Hurts" as a song that helped him out, even if only a little bit, during the dark-as-pitch first year afterward.

to shit on "Shiny Happy People" is perfectly fine, but it ought to be couched in an acknowledgement that their first few albums are unimpeachable. Seriously — go listen to "Wolves, Lower" or "So. Central Rain". To dump on SHP and then conclude, "…and that's why R.E.M. is overrated and terrible!" is simply idiotic.

And to put the dumb, obvious cherry on this thread, they obviously had complementary styles that blended into something greater than the sum of the individual parts. Neither Buck's nor Mills's parts would be half as effective without the other.

Meaning, he shepherded this scene into production and then ascended on a ray of light into the aether? Because it's a richly deserved reward.

The Artist has some stuff going for it. It's fluffy, but it's stylish. And it looks like Casablanca next to The King's Speech.

I think she uses that innate iciness pretty well. It contrasts in an interesting way with her character's obvious love and affection for her kids and husband.

To put it more charitably, I'm often impressed that Potter can create a well-rounded character even though she only has one facial expression.

I always thought it was funny and odd that when a character in a censored movie says "god damned," they bleep out the "god" part rather than the swear part.
