French horn
That faux Paper Chase french horn music they use on The Simpsons is one of my favorite recurring music cues from the show. I could just listen to it over and over.
Victor is great
I've never seen Enver Gjokaj in anything else, but I think he's one of the best actors on the show. I keep forgetting about him and then he sneaks up on me with scenes like the one in the bedroom with Adele and I'm surprised. Whenever the show is over (which probably won't be too long from now,…
Wow
They just knocked that shit out of the park, tonight. I'll admit I've never been a big fan of Miracle Laurie on the show, but she was on fire in this episode ("I guess the neighborhood went to crap while I was gone"). The scene between Mellie and Paul was awesome and I kept thinking, "Yes. This is what I've…
cover art
Based solely on the pictures from this series I would say that science fiction paperbacks (especially from the sixties) have the best cover art of any literary genre. You could start an art gallery just using framed copies of the artwork from the books in these posts. I would buy one. If I had any money.
A.I.
I think there's at least one AV Club writer who admires "A.I." (possibly Keith) and I think it's probably Steven Speilberg's most underrated movie. It's sad and poetic in a way I think a lot of people just didn't get.
knucklehead
Knucklehead seems to be common parlance for police officers. They've used it on "The Wire" and I've heard a real life former LAPD officer use it. Usually to describe criminals or suspected criminals.
Phel - the scene with the rabbit getting dressed is much less horrifying if you imagine "Puttin' On the Ritz" is playing on the soundtrack.
They're all clones
I have a half-baked theory. All of the dolls are clones. They are manufactured in the Rossum labs (hence the fetus in the jar) and then they are imprinted with a personality and provided with a family to watch them while they grow up. When they reach the age of 20 or so they are brought in…
How does Boyd feel?
I'm glad they started to directly address the morality of what is going on in the dollhouse, primarily through Echo's reaction to it. But I still have a big question mark in my mind with regard to Boyd. How does he feel about what's happening and the part he's playing? He seems to be the only one…
Best Acting of the Series
All of the actors really stepped up their game for "Wrath of Khan". James Doohan was heartbreaking, Walter Koenig has a great freak-out, Paul Winfield is awesome as usual and even Kirstie Alley gives a moving performance. But the glue that holds them all together is Ricardo Montalban. The…
Blood and Gore
"Wrath of Khan" is by far the bloodiest, goriest thing they've done in the Trek franchise. The bloody, burnt engineering ensigns; the scientists' corpses hanging from the ceiling; Khan's charred, fucked up face at the end of the movie; even the phaser effect when Terrell kills himself is just nasty. …
Michael Crichton
Any mention of Michael Crichton in the retrospective? I've always wondered how much influence he had on the series after he got the ball rolling.
good medical t.v.
Medical dramas have been a staple of t.v. for a long time but while they are often done competently it seems they are rarely done with excellence. Besides E.R. the only other shows in the genre that I can think of that have ever been excellent are M*A*S*H* and Emergency! and the latter is something…
I'll jump on any thread that gives me the chance to sing the praises of the remake of "The Blob". It's fun, gory and just a great modern creature feature in the same league as "Tremors".
Hey, Vasquez. You ever been mistaken for a man?
Emilie De Ravin
So I open my most recent envelope from Netflix and I see an ad for a new movie starring my beloved Emilie De Ravin. But it's a made for t.v. Lifetime movie. A freakin' Lifetime movie! Are you happy "Lost"? You kill off (probably) one of the sexiest, most adorable chicks on any t.v. show going and…
Tijuana Toothpaste
Well, now it's my fantasy. This show works on so many levels.
Eliza on a motorcycle
Eliza Dushku in a short, frilly skirt, and white thigh-high stockings, straddling a motorcycle?
