Well- here is what I think-
I think some works of art tell universal truths that carry on into the future even though the context with which people experience it changes- I don't think anyone alive today lives like a privileged woman in 19th century England but that doesn't stop Jane Austen from being relevant today.
Oth

Blairth-
There was a legitimate critique of the show's world building- a modern day Brooklyn that was entirely white- that was a credible point- the show dealt with that criticism in probably the most half-assed way that it could-
it created an unrealistic character and cast a well-known actor in the role. They did

Look, I know at this point it's not worth mentioning but this show was created and cast with actors who went to expensive private schools who have never lived in overpriced crummy apartments they can barely afford- so yes, their world IS overwhelmingly white- the issues the show raises are real on a personal level but

The problem with Girls is not that it is a BAD show (it isn't) or that it is inauthentic (it isn't but it also kind of is, sorta)- the main problem with Girls is that it is overpraised and it resists critique because it is unique and, in it's way, bold.
But truth be told- it really is just a pretty good show that

David Simon is starting to get kind of annoying-
HBO has given this guy 3 shows- they gave him the opportunity to do difficult-challenging shows and they kept them on the air even though no one was watching and still "half a loaf"-
All he does is bitch,bitch,bitch…

No, it doesn't make sense as a criticism- but most people aren't critics- they are viewers.
If you are going to look at the "backlash" against this show as crisis in public criticism then what we have here is a classic example of an internet echo chamber-

Hey, you can like it- I was just saying why I don't like it. It is too narrow for MY tastes.
Unlike, this article I don't have theories about why others enjoy it or why others SHOULD enjoy it.
For my tastes it is too narrowly focused to get my attention and for the characters to get my empathy.

Not liking a show because the characters are assholes is a valid, if a bit shallow, way of judging a show.
Most people spend most of their waking life with assholes at work, assholes at the grocery store etc. so when they turn on the TV they want to spend some time with people they might actually like.
Those people are

Couple of Things-
1. Judging the reaction to a show based on ignorant comments on comment boards is…well…let's just say that I don't think those boards are an accurate barometer of anything other than the lengths that people will go to to get a reaction
