I think Giles is embezzling from her. Traditionally slayers lived with their watchers, so were taken care of entirely. Buffy has a family, so Giles keeps his salary.

Except for the burning at the stake episode, Willow's parents are loving.
Amy has a good relationship with her father.
Xander's parents may have fought with each other, but were they ever abusive to him?
Buffy's mother was good (are we blaming her for dying?)

In defense of Star Trek fashion
1) Picard is French. Europeans wear weird things when relaxing. Especially old men. His outfit would seem perfectly normal even today.
2) American apparel. The future is now.

@combatQueer: Robin is canadian, and also likely part of the anglican community. The episcopalian reference made me think it was her and Barney. The quote about everything having a season also sounds like a reference to unlikely people finally settling down.

Many French people are sensitive about their accents when they speak English. Since star fleet academy functions in english, Picard would be just the kind of overachiever to study until he could speak English with a perfect English accent.

The chapter in Goblet of fire when Harry and Ron have to find dates is one of my favorites. Is that light-hearted enough?
