I dunno, the AV Club is pretty good about the less tv snob friendly shows usually. And to be fair The Vampire Diaries deserved that attitude at the very very beginning.

Yeah I started watching this due to Vampire Diaries withdrawl as well. Werewolves are disadvantaged against vampires re hotness since it's harder for them to remain hot when in monster mode (that makeup), but they have an advantage via more excuses to take off their shirts.
