Like you, GeoGreg, I was a kid when SNL first came out. I think, heresy as this is to my friends, that the first 5 seasons were vastly overrated.  There were a whole lot of overlong sketches and, as has been the case ever since, when the show hit it big, they became smug, self-referential and not at all funny…
