Apparently, Nichols St. John (Abel Ferrara's closest collaborator) didn't want to get involved in this film because he found the subject matter distateful. Which is funny for a guy who wrote Ms. 45 — the lead from that film actually wrote Bad Lieutenant —, King of New York, and then The Funeral.

The Artisan release of Bad Lieutenant prior to this one is pristine and anamorphic, but then again Ferrara's commentaries are pretty entertaining.
