I'd say the show puts an emphasis on areas of actual learning over true trivia or useless knowledge. The breadth of information required that runs the gamut from the serious to the silly is what makes the game more than just a trivia contest.

There was some editing there, I figure that Trebek accepted it, then the judges stepped in to reverse it, they stopped tape and cut out Alex's acceptance, which is why the other players didn't get a chance at it.

In all seriousness, all other factors being equal, a regular A.V. Club reader has a clear advantage at Jeopardy! over a non-reader.
