In both the animation and the writing, they're going for a vibe of "Hey, this is just a freeform, cool indie thing" which I'm sure HBO digs for its brand, even if hardly anyone watches it.
Maybe a better writing staff would cost money, too.
If the animators did their jobs, the show would cost more and it would be cancelled.

At least for me, a sport is only interesting to watch if I'm knowledgeable about it and have some expectation about how it should play out. The fun is in seeing how close my thoughts beforehand match up to reality and in forming opinions about the performances and the strategies used.

Once ABC made the decision to move HE after MF, after that season they should have either gotten behind it and kept it there for two more seasons or cancelled it. Because no one on Earth thought it was going to be successful on Tuesdays at 9.
Because people pay for Netflix, so they are more reluctant to admit that they're contributing to the production of the same "true crime" trash that's available everywhere.
