Listened to the new record last night, and its pretty solid all the way through.  Cornell's voice is all there, the riffs are heavy, and Thayil is making great weird noises.  Maybe a little more slickly produced than their classic stuff, but it doesn't sound nearly as pro-tooled to death as most modern recordings.

I never got the big deal with this. I guess it depends on what is expected of the musicians. If they're just showing up at the gig and jamming, than that just sounds like a good time to me. Redd Kross did indeed open for STP in the summer of 94, along with the Meat Puppets at the show I went to at least (Oklahoma City).  Personally I had a great time, and walked away from it a big Redd Kross fan (had never heard of them previously).
