If I were compelled to fanwank the operation of small arms in Firefly, I'd say something about being them being electric, and powered by an aluminum-air battery or such. But it's still completely implausible — there's no conceivable reason some sort of attachment (maybe compressed-air tank, maybe just a hermetic seal)
