Look, when I watch the Simpsons nowadays, I don't expect the greatness of its earlier seasons.  I don't even demand that it be good or funny.  All I could possibly hope for is that it won't be physically painful to watch.  And even with those meagre expectations, the Simpsons continues to fail.

I am a humanities student, and I can assure you I am not self-hating.  I just harbour a deep loathing for the belief that no piece of fiction is worthy unless it can be dissected for themes, and that simply enjoying something on its own merits is plebeian.
