The best thing that ever happened to this film was it tanking at the box office.  If it had earned a heap of money, it would have been showered with the same opprobrium as Avatar.  But since it was a major flop, and all the critics predicted it was going to be a major flop, it earned a string of contrarian supporters

Can't people just enjoy Donnie Darko for what it is?  Why does a movie have to have some tacked on message to be worthwhile?  American Beauty did that, and it's half-assed attempt at profundity basically ruined the film for me.

Moulin Rouge is such a pleasantly unpretentious film that I just can't really hate it that much.  Sure, it's all set dressing and splendour with not much going on beneath, but it's such watchable set dressing and splendour.  And then there's the Roxanne sequence, which succeeds where many superior movie musicals fail

It's such a self-serving cliché, since it feeds in to a convenient fantasy that all homophobes are actually just closet cases.  Call it Ryan Murphy's razor.

I'm assuming most people here remember the '90s, since they only ended thirteen years ago.  Also, considering how most people crapped on the '90s at the time, I can't wait until they get re-imagined as a glorious golden age.

American Beauty is that rare film that I admire on a technical level but absolutely loathe on a thematic level.  It's beautifully shot, well written and wonderfully acted - but it's also a showcase for a repulsive, half-baked nihilism masquerading as enlightenment on the one hand and an empty-headed, facile

Confused pacing was more of a problem than poor writing.  Scott seemed unable to decide on whether he wanted Prometheus to be a tense thriller, a claustrophobic horror, a competent action film or a wondrous space odyssey, and so ended up taking a stab at all four.  While simply maintaining a consistent horror

Did you know that if you take "usually", remove the first three and the last two letters, and add "ien3", it spells "Alien3"?  Weird.
