I thought Brooks' character, in that fantastic monologue to Holly Hunter, states rather clearly that Hurt's "evil" was his sheer banality.  With repeated exposure to it, the public would just adapt to the lower standards that he presents.  Man, I love that scene.

He just seemed like a guy who made every day count.  In his song "The Key," from his last album, he sings "Just between you & me" as part of the chorus, and I really felt like I'm the "you".  Just a cool cat.  RIP, and enjoy your next journey.

"Homicide" is one of my all-time favorites.  His work informed the tone of that brilliant show as much as Tom Fontana & Barry Levinson.  That, along with all his other great work, is a hell of a legacy.  RIP.
