You know, everyone's talking about that "friend" like she and Megan swore a blood oath or something. How the hell do we even know who she was, besides that 1) she was from Megan's class; 2) she was over at the house and 3) she asked for an enormous favor?

He's like half of Don; he's got the creative spark but he hasn't got the client-facing smoothness and personal snakiness. He's just too raw and transparent to avoid putting people off; presumably he'll learn to be more canny, cool and flexible/adaptable in order to win people over to his way of thinking and get what

"Okay, let's compromise…put on this John Cage album and we'll call it even."

How about the fundamental difference between Joan and Megan? Or the fact that Harry and/or Paul aren't protected by the "client" halo and Don would probably physically kill them? (Since they're not divorced and he's not conveniently in Vietnam)?

It's just one of those "blank signifiers" like the monolith in 2001 or the caves in A Passage to India. It sits there in the story behaving exactly like a metaphor but without a single specific referent.

Not me! How the fuck would she know if Megan had talent or not? And she got the ad (after Don got her the audition), so the joke's on Marie.

"Are you alone?"? Everybody's mentioned it.

Yeah, and it's so dark (the way that Mad Men just loves to play it) because that campaign was pure evil; leveraging women's societal gains so as to persuade them to buy cigarettes.

I'll bet you that, when we come back in at the beginning of Season 6, she'll have long since moved on to something else. (And Pete's name will be on the door.)

According to Hamm, Don was totally supposed to like the reel (although others read it the other way as you did). I'm inclined to accept Hamm's version despite how it looks, for reasons that have been fairly exhaustively debated above (circa page 5, or later; it's a moving target the way the discussion threads swell).
