They were not, my friend. 8-track and cassette coexisted for several years, much like DVD and VHS. I recall buying 8-tracks into the early 80s (I couldn't afford a fancy cassette deck). My local Tower was 98% vinyl, with a separate room in the back that housed cassettes and 8s.

Cassette? You young punk! In my days we trudged eight miles to the closest Tower Records to buy somebody's crappy 8-track!
