Nah, you're right. I love the movie and I think the songs are forgettable at best, and make the film grind to a halt at worst.

Bingo. I hated the songs as a kid. Still do. Oh my god, how many times I fast forwarded past that awful song Charlie's mom sings that makes the whole fucking movie grind to a goddamned halt.

I do too. They're such stunningly different movies that you can't really compare them.

I always had a soft spot for the actual songs from the original book, so their attempts to adapt them definitely made me happy.
