I'd include Blade Runner here, rather than in improved.  The drab voice-over at the beginning emphasized the noir movie roots, the unicorn dream is dated as all hell, and the excellent ambiguous ending was made simple and stupid.

Anybody else notice these Avatar reviews are terrible?  Like they were copy & pasted from some junior high kid's blog.  Usually I enjoy looking at the AV club reviews to episodes I like because of insightful discussion, but this just feels like some kind of hyperactive re-cap.

Well look at reality.  The last 10 AV Club reviews includes just 2 franchised movies, so obviously non-franchised movies get released.  Of the top 10 grossing movies released in 2011, all 10 of them were franchises.  So, the movies do come out, just nobody cares about them.
