Basically there was no point to the entire season story arc. Why wouldn't he close it? They've already done so many sacrifices (and this one was going to be such a big deal) only to chicken out at the last minute!

I kinda liked them, actually. Nick Kroll's delivery of the line "Oh you are so on that things have now become very much like Donkey Kong" still makes me laugh just by thinking about it.
