The Harder They Fall is actually really brilliant, and Bogie gave a great performance! Beat the Devil is a stone cold classic as well, John Huston is maybe my favorite director.

He is (I think) supposed to be an unlikable character; but sympathetic. He is a raging alcoholic and severely depressed, but obviously since his character is a comment on masculinity in the 20th century and how repression of emotions leads to fits of rage, hatred, and violence.
