I watched this on A&E's website, and it was hilariously filled with truck commercials. A couple of times I couldn't tell when the show stopped and commercial began, and vice versa.

I the explanation was a little odd, but maybe it was just Walt acting like a teach for the kid cop. To give us another reason to think he;s not a rube or whatever.  She did say that she had seen a suicide like that where the bullet didnt exit. I would think she would know the logistics of why.
