I read the headline and mistook it to be about Rerun from What's Happening!! playing James Franco, but I was wrong. I was so wrong.
Personally, I think it does capture the zeitgeist. I mean, everyone I know is unfunny and repetitive.

Hey, there was plenty of genuinely funny stuff in this to laugh at. I think the characters were (at times) supposed to be actually humorous. Just like real people.

This is how I saw it. A dry-as-timber send-up of critical darlings. Sort of how "Dirty Work" was a parody of Adam Sandler-esque bottom-feeder comedies, yet was so on-the-nose it easily could be mistaken for one.
