I had to like, have a contemplative cigarette alone with my thoughts after this ep, no lie. And I'm still in awe of how they kept death/suicide just in the background this whole season, hanging around being unnerving, until Lane gets called in by Don who tells him to "prepare an elegant exit."

And yet it still IS a joke, you know?

Just that it was completely run-of-the-mill. If you read it out of context you wouldn't think "well this is really a suicide note disguised as a letter of resignation," you'd just think "oh, a letter of resignation." Just standard and everyday and there.

Oh and the moment that made me go "welp this is definitely happening" was Don telling Lane he should "prepare an elegant exit."

Lane's a well-respected man about town, doing the best thing so conservatively.

Yeah, I totally bought into this idea of "oh, so he'll take this as a sign or something that he should embrace what Don said and start over, okay"

This episode was fucking gutting, and I think a B+ is really low (conversely, I don't think last week's deserved such a high grade, although the acting from Christina Hendricks was amazing).

Also, if you fire Dan, then you have Dan out there working for anyone but you.
