Over the years, The Shining holds up less and less well as a film, although the performances are great and the photography and set pieces are stunning. The book is really one giant allegory for alcoholism which the movie touches on but not nearly in as much depth as the book.

After reading Tobias's article, I actually think the ending makes more sense. They had already attained an emotional stalemate with each other to maintain the marriage, but it's their LIBIDOS that needed resuscitating at the end. Per the article, Kidman's character is insulted that Cruise doesn't think her capable of

Say what you want about Kidman's acting chops, she was genius in To Die For. She's got it in her, just doesn't always show.

Gotta disagree, BLyndon is deadly dull interspersed with RO'Neal going batshit crazy once in a while.

The reason Kidman's pot speech comes off so inauthentic is that Kubrick made her do 90 takes. 90 TAKES!!! The greatest actor in the world couldn't come up with 90 ways to play a scene and still be convincing. Plus she never seemed stoned to me, more mentally defective.

Yeah, the actor who plays Ben sure can deliver a line, huh?

Bleah, Fahey's waaay hotter with the goatee.

Ecch, give me One Two Three any day!

I love the SMartin Pennies too, it's beautifully shot, well acted and the production numbers are top notch. It was a casualty of Hollywood's need to pidgeonhole everything - Steve Martin shouldn't be serious, musicals shouldn't be dark - and suffers a bit from a lack of consistent vision. But I definitely recommend it

Thank you, Nathan
For permanently curing me of any the misplaced hero worship I ever had for the great actors of our times. Next time I'm swooning over a devastating performance by a Sarandon or a Winslet, I now have the indelible image of them at home memorizing lines about wet cunts and backdoor safes, utilizing

I saw Singing Detective first (Brit version of course, not the RDowneyJr. abomination) and was an instant Potter fan. I don't think it's too wild or out there for an average sophisticated viewer. I'm a fan of the Hoskins Pennies but Singing Detective will always be my favorite. And c'mon Michael Gambon, I mean, c'mon!

"DWG" my new favorite acronym on these boards!

Was the category douchery?

You can never be forgiven for Solaris.

He and Trey Parker are the two most Broadway obsessed heterosexuals I've ever encountered.

SuperKing: the manatees just swapped out one irrelevant bit for another.

Don't you mean sensual?

We're 'Murkins here. We don't know from no Froggie Tintin. (Fuck Spielberg)

I thought the 3rd "act" of Opening Night was excruciating. Didn't help that I saw it in a theater and was trapped.
