I think Penn gives a landmark performance, right up there with Sophie's Choice, Monster, Cuckoo's Nest, Dog Day Afternoon, etc. as an instant standout achievement of its era.

Some films, no matter how brilliant, are just not for everybody. An excellent parallel to this film is "L.I.E."

Jungle Fever/Do the Right Thing showed a promising genius with a talent for real depth and range of emotions. Pulp Fiction locked Jackson into the same scowling growling (yet ironic!) stereotype we'll no doubt be watching for the next 30 years, like Clint Eastwood…
