There is nothing wrong with discussing TV's lack of diversity. The problem with Sonia's review of that episode of The Leftovers was it didn't find anything insightful to say about the show's attitudes to race. Which is, in fact, the problem I generally have with Sonia's writing. Her prose is good, but her views are

It would kind of make more sense if Amy Brenneman had only just gone to the GR…a year later I feel they might have sort of dealt with it.

The criticism of The Leftovers has frequently been overblown, most likely a belated reaction to the Lost finale. But, as someone who has not seen all of Lost and therefore does not have that baggage, I will say that i find the show to be quite confused. I think it wants to be a slice-of-life show about a post-rapture

Fun fact: objectively good is not a quality any art can claim!

Urgh, I can't believe how much I idolised this guy when I was 16

Oh sure, I agree. But the critics who've seen the first episode suggest its creepy, but kind of stupid whenever anyone opens their mouth. Hence the comparison.

The Strain sounds VERY Walking Dead-esque. I anticipate it will be enjoyable summer nonsense and not much more. The Leftovers is getting a pretty muted early response, but not bad. Wouldn't get too excited over either of them.

An excellent article, Todd, that really gets at what made this episode so horrifying. The image of evil supreme, unchallenged and unstoppable, leaving all opponents wrecked in his wake, shook me as deep as almost anything I've ever seen.

Man I was about to give you all the likes for your excellent description of the strengths and flaws of Orphan Black, but then you had to go and rag on Fargo : /

Do not waste your time watching Sons of Anarchy and House of Cards.

It would probably still be my number one so far this year, if it wasn't for The Americans- a show I didn't even place in my top 20 in 2013- having an absolutely outstanding second season

I thought it was the best show on TV during season one, but I thought season two was a step down. It became pulpier, and I seem to be the only person on the internet who doesn't like that- I thought the twists, passed episode six, were largely unearned and lacked weight, and the show has had little thematic depth

I agree with the WOT man! All hail WOT man!

If you think this was a bad season of TV, you're watching TV wrong.

Sorry I didn't respond quickly- damn disqus keeps conking out.

It's the internet. Just as it's easy for Heisenberg to declare his view of the show without justification, it's too easy for me to declare my opposing opinion without justification. Sometimes it's too easy to give in.

Rust and Marty are essentially archetypal antiheroes though. A mishmash of Jimmy McNulty, Vic Mackey and Tony Soprano with the interesting bits removed. Also, the show seems to have decided that Rust Cohle is an awesome human being who is right about everything.

So basically, True Detective was written like all procedurals and murder mysteries, and The Killing was just plain stupid?

'It could turn out to be one of the best tv seasons of all time.'
