Actually, in NYC, Liz's apartment would be very expensive. I remember Tina Fey saying it would be a million dollar place in the commentaries.

And sorry, I'm still not 100% convinced Gloria will be with Jay if he wasn't rich.

Everybody Hates Chris feels like the most recent blue collar NYC sitcom. But it was set in the 80's. I don't know if there have been any others since then.

I'm not completely caught up on the New Girl, but I have a feeling those characters will land on their feet. Their financial problems feel temporary. Nick is just a few credits shy of a law degree. Winston and Jess are both college educated and merely in a flux professionally.

That's an interesting observation, and you might be right.

@avclub-24f6f7a488efc0455e1cb95aea962bed:disqus , she was in the U.S. for awhile before she met Jay. She worked as a hairdresser. And I think Manny was mostly raised in the U.S.

Well, nobody likes to give Chuck Lorre credit for anything, understandably so. I'm surprised the article didn't mention him though since a lot of his shows have blue collar backgrounds (Roseanne, Mike and Molly, Grace Under Fire).

Yes! I mentioned that in my OP. I loved that episode.

For some reason the wealth on Modern Family really bugs me. When Claire and Phil destroyed their microwave in a food fight, and Claire was just like, "Let's go to the mall and get a new one". Or when she destroyed expensive remote control b/c she couldn't understand how to use it. I think Hollywood is capable of it

It seems like she's more dedicated to stage work these days. It's where she started out.

Good catch. I hope the show doesn't abandon that aspect of its universe.
