Why must we assume that anyone who murders or attempts to murder a politician is mentally ill? It is diagnostically unsound (assuming that no psychologist has diagnosed the assailant) and it stigmatizes mental illness, conflating immorality with psychological disorder.

I'm not even sure what you're arguing. Should "coastal" only ever refer to those who literally reside on oceanfront property and not to those who live in large cities in the American Northeast and Pacific regions and generally hold more liberal views vis-a-vis the "heartland" or Middle America.
