I can understand preferring Whiplash, but if your biggest criticism of Boyhood is that Mason's life was too typical, I think you're missing the point of the movie.

Holy shit, did I love Hawke's performance in Boyhood. You could watch all of his scenes with the sound off, and get the gist of his arc solely through his body language.
