This is much more concerned with being propulsive and entertaining than MoS was, and it does not at all suffer from the character problems or inane plotting of BvS, so you should be in good shape!

You'll enjoy The Silmarillion, the appendices to LOTR, and Unfinished Tales then. But I'd still recommend starting with The Hobbit and LOTR, otherwise those would be too impenetrable. Walk, crawl, then run.
