I would strongly recommend starting with Series 3. When I initially watched Red Dwarf, I saw the pilot and a few eps from series 1, and I was like "Meh", but the show's best material is in this pocket between Series 3-6. If you hate that stuff, then yeah, Red Dwarf is not for you.

In the first two seasons (at least before they "remastered" them), the opening theme was this solemn orchestral version of the peppy "It's Cold Outside" song from the ending credits.

I'm glad AVClub is covering this. Red Dwarf was such a fixture of the PBS British Comedy lineup when I was a teen, and it was the show I looked most forward every week.

When my wife and I saw the trailer for this, I knew she would eat it up. It's Glee-tastic crossed with all those Bring it On/Step Up movies. I told her that an AVClub grade of "C" is basically tacit approval for a movie of this genre.
