I may catch some flack for this, but I never saw Walt as a badass.  I saw as more of a lame and intelligent middle-aged guy who is trying to play badass.  For example, his "I am the one who knocks speech" seemed to me like a non-badass desperately trying to convince some that he is indeed a badass.

I think that these people's point was that they knew that lying in bed all day and watching TV is not an awesome thing to do—therefore, they felt compelled to explain their actions by stating "I felt like shit," etc.
