I think he's just saying that a show having "ambition" doesn't automatically earn it points in his book.

Yeah, I know, that's exactly why I hate the term! But I'm not really sure how else to refer to Wilco, The National, Spoon, et al under a genre banner except as "indie". I suppose "rock", but that's even more broad and also brings in a bunch of things that I don't really listen to.
