You're assuming that its audience consists of normal people, and not comics geeks, zombie nerds, TV addicts, and other shut-ins. And also people who will be reviewing it for a beloved pop-culture publication.

Making an anti-war movie, or book, or poem, or whatever, doesn't have anything to do with what war it is. It doesn't have anything to do with the moral rightness or wrongness of the war. There were millions of people in WWI who were utterly convinced that they were doing the right thing and still came away thinking…
Criadahu, I loved that too. It was delightful how quickly Al went from scoffing at the whole thing to getting weirdly enthusiastic about it, and Billy Quizboy has obviously been waiting YEARS to do a noir shtick, practicing his patter and so on.
The Jager bomb came after the the massive popularity of Jagermeister as a shooter. There's a funny scene in the book where an American marketing guy talks about turning Tuaca into the new Jagermeister, a suggestion that is met with horror by the Italian makers of Tuaca, who barely even sell any of the stuff at home…
Men
What a bunch of pussies.
Brock seemed like more of a dick than usual this episode. I was a tad alarmed at his enthusiasm for Real Dolls.
According to the pre-show bumper, they used real Transformers and Hulk masks to make those vocal effects, which is probably why you could only understand about half of what they were saying. (I'm guessing the Hulk mask was purple less as an ATHF homage than a legal CYA.)
We haven't ignored it. We covered the first issue when it came out, and will probably talk about the collection(s) when released, which, is our standard approach with pretty much everything.
The Thomas/Smith Conan run for Marvel contains a Conan/Elric crossover story, by the way. I can't remember if Moorcock actually co-wrote it, but I know he collaborated on its planning.
On Twitter, a pound sign is called a "hashtag", and makes anything you type immediately after it into a searchable term. It's used for themed or trending topics, and certain insufferable AV Club staffers frequently use it for endless lists of abstract, marginally funny pop culture jokes.
"Pigeons from Hell" is terrific.
It's worth branching out, as some other posters have suggested, into Howard's non-fantasy work as well. I'm a fan of the Kull and Bran Mak Morn stories too, but despite the substantial amount of crap he wrote under deadline, the guy was a hell of a writer, and even some of his sports stories and and westerns were…
Those are version of previous collections. I didn't know they were back in print, but I'd still advise getting the Orion edition: it's only one book instead of three, it has more background material, and most importantly, it's been substantially edited and cleaned up. I don't know if you can say the same for the…
The best place to start isn't always the most obvious. I absolutely think people should read the collected Howard stories, as I say in the article, but I think the movie, while not entirely true to the stories, is a neat, tidy intro for those unfamiliar with the character and perhaps unwilling to jump into a dense,…
Yeah, that "cast evaluation" bit is hilarious, especially with Chevy Chase being a total dick.
Really? "Nearly every week"? How about you give me one example. Just one, besides today. Its shouldn't be too hard; there's an archive right up there of every AVQ&A, and since I do it nearly every week, you should be able to find one without even trying hard.
Clearly, because I am a joyless, hateful old crank.
With Shaun Cassidy behind it, it's almost guaranteed to be (a) really good and (b) totally doomed. He was behind the incredible "American Gothic" and the way-better-than-it-should-have-been "Invasion", both of which were excellent and both of which were canceled after one season.
Yeah, overall, it's a LotL parody, but I always thought David was doing Dr. Smith from "Lost in Space" in it.
I have sometimes been tempted to order an Ultimate Dicksucker at a bar.
