I'll cop to Rand being an inelegant shorthand and actually off base in some ways. One of the virtues of the movie is that it deals with ideas that are too complex to be easily categorized or dismissed. One of its troubles is that it then dismisses them despite some disturbing implications.

It's firmly embedded in Doug Benson's go-to bag of catchphrases on Doug Loves Movies.

I think that underneath the spectacular action and the sharp wit are some legitimate questions about the moral universe being promoted.  Syndrome has a persuasive case against Mr. Incredible and the cult of the super-men (which the movie should get credit for presenting at all, I suppose), but once it's been presented

In all three cases, I could never remember who was who…

Vaughn doesn't do urban cowboy quite well enough to do the Gerald McRaney part. Wilson had his chance at the competent pro role in I Spy and didn't really pull it off. Sorry, but I'm exercising my veto on this one.

I didn't realize that NOT casting Luiz Guzman was an option.

Not just being contrary, but this just never did anything for me.  I guess it should score some points for realism, but otherwise… eh.

Except what the hell was the point of driving on that roof? (I am assuming we are talking Caine, not Wahlberg, yes?)

The "Running Scared" chase is pretty clever in getting the cars up on the train tracks, but the POV shots once they're up there are so unrealistic it does kinda spoil the thrills.

THAT was amazing.

Starts off pretty mundane, doesn't make much use of the multiple police cars, but when it becomes a duel on the surface streets, there's some nice setups. And I appreciate the way Coleman's car disintegrates over the course of the sequence.

Hey Joel Keller, agreed on the wonders of Neil Diamond's songwriting, with "I'm a Believer" being a standout, but the Monkees classic that was widely cited in Davy Jones's legacy was "Daydream Believer," which Jones did sing lead on, and which Diamond did not write.
