"The Seventh Seal" is basically a black comedy. It's reputation as a dour drama is one of those "print the legend" sort of things.

You have to remember that The Wire, like all great works of narrative art, is not just about what happens or it's characters, it's about themes (and Simon is one of the most theme-driven filmmakers in America today).

I think the notion that Simon wanted to just get back at his boss is a presumption, not a criticism, and it doesn't negate the content either way.
