@avclub-0ae7484a9f3bbd2a21df420050c032ae:disqus  See, that's unusual to me; there are a few guys hanging out in certain fanfic areas, and you can spot them fairly quickly  if you have a good general feel for "girls write like this/boys write like this", mostly because the dudes don't focus as much on feelings and

@avclub-a1967e6de4ca99fb2635d94b99453928:disqus I can really only speak for me, but I could not give two sailing shits about most tech details. I didn't read war non-fiction for the longest time because everything I found was troop movements this and dates that and weaponry specs maps and arrows and blah blah blah omg

And to keep up the comparison, I don't understand the appeal of sitting on a couch/bench/whatever, watching someone else play a sport, especially if you've paid a large amount of money to do so. Why not overcome the tribalistic identification with Team, go outside and go form your own sports team that puts on public

@avclub-a1967e6de4ca99fb2635d94b99453928:disqus  I would like to make a wildly generalized statement here and say that the kind of fic @avclub-0ae7484a9f3bbd2a21df420050c032ae:disqus is talking about sounds very much as if it would appeal more to guys.

It strikes me as very strange that, as a regular activity, people create fantasy football teams and become deeply involved in March Madness.

Yeah, there are people who aren't interested in fic if the canon is still ongoing because the probability that the story will be nullified, i.e., "Jossed".  And me personally, if I'm pretty much satisfied with the story as it is, whether the author's done or not, I don't go looking for fic. But there are lots and lots

They're kind of hit-and-miss; the first two I loved, the third drags, that kind of thing. But the 4th or 5th switches to dragon POV for half the book, which made me very very happy.

@avclub-84ca205fe6bc691c41c3bfe5a2820a15:disqus Ah, there I cannot help you; VSD is pretty much all of hers I ever read. Sorry!

Eh, I think it's somewhat impolite to write fic if the author's asked that there not be any, but I don't really have a strong stance on it.  From what I've seen, the ones who "ask" also tend to be a little histrionic about the whole thing, aaaaaaaand that just hits my oppositional defiance button (although to be fair,

That's actually the point though, using previously-developed characters and trading on the pre-earned affection. The vast majority of fanfic readers say they they want to read more about canon characters; they're not interested in  reading a fic that focuses on original characters doing original things (and believe

You said "Hank", and I thought "Hank VENTURE", and I was like, "YES let's see THAT" and then I was disappointed that it doesn't exist.

Also Naomi Novik's Temeraire series started as Aubrey/Mautrin, and she actually still participates in Yuletide, at least as an admin.

@avclub-84ca205fe6bc691c41c3bfe5a2820a15:disqus If you're looking for diaries, those are easily found. I'll throw you a link if you want.

@Scrawler2:disqus I'm kind of an extreme example for this - it's well-documented by my friends how much trouble I generally have finding a guy hot if I don't like (or don't know) his personality, no matter what the dude looks like.  I seriously never gave Ackles a second look (and in fact thought he was kinda weird

Yeah, I will definitely agree with this. Because I found Walton Goggins the opposite of attractive in the first, like, two seasons of Justified, and then in season three, boom, not sure I could pick between Boyd and Raylan at gunpoint. Granted, I did already find Boyd to be a fascinating character, but he wasn't

Well OH MY GOD this is AMERICA and it's Captain AMERICA I think they are required BY LAW to SHARE that footage with AMERICA

@disqus_NLoJoQC0VE:disqus Doesn't matter whether he's actually married or not. They thought he was, and their reaction was vastly idiotic, entitled, and out-of-proportion with reality.

@avclub-a74751295995aad6799bb16021522543:disqus Yeah, I super don't get the "ew [hair colour]" thing, but apparently I am in the vast minority with that.  Hair colour matters about as much to me on level of attractiveness as brand of peanut butter they use.

Someone, somewhere,on some website brought upTimothy Olyphant as Dr. Strange, and my comic nerd friend now refuses to entertain any other suggestions.

Alternately, dudes who are shiny magazine perfect are boring to look at.  Random example: Matt Bomer is considered to possess a gorgeous face by many, many people of both genders and all sexual orientations.   Despite the very pretty blue eyes, I find him overall very bland. He's like a computer-generated version of
