Agreed - it's not the first time an auther's "target" audience didn't get it.

Borrowing elements (such as framing devices, structural devices, etc.) from film was actually a fairly essential aspect in crime fiction from the 1940s through the 1970s. There's actually an entire sub-genre of crime fiction dedicated to Hollywood (and film) specifically.*

Just as an FYI, I'm not positing this as an "answer" for the book, just as an interesting in-road into the character/novel that helps address some of Keith's questions and some of the general hate for Richard.

Hilarious - Disturbing, but hilarious
I think the best way to look at this particular book (and its hero) is within the context of the "crime fiction" genre itself. I think that, with "The Woman Chaser," Willeford struggles against the genre's restrictions and expectations.
